Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, i have a friend with a major diet issue, she has Celiac disease but is also allergic to Avacado, soy, peanuts, and anything with wheat in it. What can she eat to gain weight? she's thin enough to pop balloons off of.
Dear James:To gain weight calorie intake must exceed calorie expenditure. Your friend may need to make some simple changes in her diet to consume extra calories and gain some weight. For example choosing healthy high calorie foods like cheese, yoghurt, bananas, nuts or seeds, breakfast cereal, olive oil, oily fish, beef or bacon. It may help to increase portion size, by using a slightly larger plate or bowl than normal. High energy protein drinks may provide extra nutrition and calories and are available at most drug stores. I would recommend attending a dietician for a calorie rich diet plan, with regular weight monitoring and follow-up to improve weight and overall health in Coeliac Disease. |
