Why take medicationa on an empty stomach?

Dear Ask The Doctor: When taking certain meds or supplyments, directions say take this on a empty stomach, how long does it take after eating for your stomach to be empty.

Dear Cynthia: Some medications should be taken on an empty stomach. This is usually because food prevents the medication from being fully absorbed into the body. Alternatively, if food, stomach acid and digestive enzymes are present, they may destroy or damage the contents of the pill. If your medication needs to be taken on an empty stomach, take it one hour before meals or two hours after food with a full glass of liquid, usually water. Some medications that should not be taken with food should also not be taken with milk. Your local pharmacist may provide further information regarding administration of your medication.
