Dietary Suggestions for Wired Jaw

Dear Ask The Doctor: My jaw has been wired shut for almost 2.5 weeks now after I got punched in the lower jaw on a golf course. I was 165 pounds roughly the day it happened and am already down to 149 pounds. I still can't take solid foods for another 4 weeks. What can i do to maintain my weight? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Tony: Thank you for your question.  A wired jaw is often recommended for a fractured jaw in an attempt to avoid reconstructive surgery. It is usually essential to maintain the wired jaw for a period of four to eight weeks.

The issue of weight loss you mentioned is common as you are restricted to a liquid diet.  For some individuals, the weight loss can be a positive benefit.  For individuals who desire not to loose further weight, I suggest the following:

Eat more frequently and in smaller quatities. 5-6 small meals are better than 2-3 large ones.

Avoid low fat and diet products.

Increase protein rich foods such as: cheese, eggs, meat, poultry, fish, dairy, legumes, nuts and tofu.

Increase calorie rich foods such as: cheese, sour cream, butter, pasta, potatotes, bread and avacados.

Increase high calorie liquids such as: milk, fruit juice and shakes.

Consider high calorie over the counter products such as: Ensure plus, Boost plus and Whey protein shakes.

I hope this helps and good luck.
