Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 17 and i have had my period in almosted 3 months! i a not on a pill, not sexual active and its scaring me because i dont think it should be doing this. i have had irregular periods ever since i first started! please help?
Dear Catie: Most of the times, irregular periods are part of the normal changes that can happen when youre a teen. At some point as you grow, your cycle will probably settle into a recognizable pattern. This usually happens by 3 years after your first period. After those years if you continue to have irregular menstruation, a visit to your Gynecologist might be granted to rule other possibilities.Commonly Teenagers present Irregular periods as a result of certain medications, excessive exercise, very low body weight, or not eating enough calories. Others may develop problems as a result of a hormone imbalance. For example, disorders of the thyroid gland can cause menstrual irregularities if the levels of thyroid hormone in the blood become too low or too high.I would definitely suggest you to consult your Gynecologist to rule out those or other possibilities; he would probably suggest you to take Oral Contraceptive pills to regulate your Menses. I wish you the best. |
