Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 21 years old and had a Mirena IUD put in Feb of 2007 after I had my son. I have not had a period since. I went back to the dr. shortly after because I was having extremely bad cramping and she sent me for an ultrasound and upon getting the results said everything was fine. I did not go to the doctor until recently (beginning 2009). After getting my records from te first doctor, the second doctor realized that I had a very large ovarian cyst which the first dr. had failed to mention. She sent me for another ultrasound to make sure the cyst was ok and they notices I had numerous polyps- there had to be at least 30 they were absolutely everywhere. The dr. said she didn't know if it was polycystic ovarian syndrome or a side effect of the Mirena. I had a pap done that came back positive for high risk HPV and had a biopsy done of a small lesion that came back as mild. Since then I have had very bad pain in my lower adbomen and some discharge- some of it a little bloody. When I went back to the dr. for my follow-up pap I told her about te discharge which she could still see a little bit and said she though it was just one of the cysts that popped. The other night I started bleeding out of nowhere like I had my period and now it is extremely light- close to nothing. I have not had my period in 2 years. My dr. is on vacation and cannot see me for 2 weeks. I don't know why I would just start bleeding out of nowhere like that and like I said I have not had my period for 2 years now so I can't see it starting again- especially only for a day. Could this be the cysts, the hpv, the iud, or something else? I have had the same sexual partner for almost a year now and have been tested so it is not an STD. What could this be?
