Dear Tim: Hematospermia (blood in semen) can be an alarming symptom. However, more often than not, the underlying cause is benign. Common conditions which present with hematospermia include recent prostate biopsy or surgery, infections of the prostate gland or urethra, urethral strictures and bleeding disorders. Often time hematospermia resolves in its own without any further recurrence. You should see a urologist for a complete examination including the appropriate laboratory tests. Given your age, the underlying cause is most likely benign. |
