Toe Nail Fungas |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have noticed a discolroation and hardening of my toe nails (not all) and am wondering if there is any remedy for toe nail fungus that isn't too costly? Any good home remedies for this condition? Are there any good over the counter meds for this condition? When I asked my doctor about treatment, he advised that at my age (63) not to worry about it. Dear Larry: I understand your worry about toe nail fungus. This type of infections are very common and could cause Brittleness, Change in nail shape, Crumbling of the nail, Debris trapped under the nail, Discoloration, Loosening (detaching) of the nail, Loss of luster and shine, Thickening and should be treated to prevent spread to other nails or parts of the body. Over the counter creams and ointments generally do not help treat this condition but you could try using them if less than half the nail is involved such as Terbinafine cream or Ciclopirox Olamine. Â Vinegar is a commonly recommended home remedy. Its effectiveness has not been proven or disproven in a medical study. Newer oral medicines are available, these are more effective because they go through the body to penetrate the nail plate within days of starting therapy; however they are expensive, may not be given in people with known liver disease and need to be prescribed by your physician. I suggest you to re evaluate your condition with your physician for the most appropriate treatment. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
