Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a very small penis and it is causing me a lot of concern. This is the first time I have told anyone about this as I'm too embarassed to see my doctor. I have been worried about this all through my teens and have always been aware that I was small compared to other people my age. It just hasn't grown and when it isn't erect you can't even see it through my underwear. All these things have added up and I'm really worried about it. When erect, my penis measures about 11.5 cm, I manage to masturbate but as soon as it's over, my penis shrivels up to nothing but skin. I am 22 and can't imagine having sex with my penis this size. I think about it all the time and I can't even go to public toilets or showers because I am so embarrassed. I know that you don't advise surgery but I don't think I will ever come to terms with my penis size, particularly when I am not erect and you can barely see it. I have heard about natural penis enlargement exercises is it true and safe to do and If I opt for surgery how much would it cost and how long does it take to recover? I know it seems as if I'm whingeing but it really is getting me down. Any advice you can give me apart from 'live with it' would be genuinely appreciated.
Dear Martin: I can understand your distress at your present situation. Let me first reassure you that if your measurements are accurate then you are within the normal range for penis size! There is also a good chance that your measurement is inaccurate if you conducted it yourself and that the true length is likely to be a little greater. Should you still feel the need to pursue penis enlargement surgery be aware of the following facts:
- Surgery usually only adds 2-3 cm
- Enlargement will not directly affect sexual performance
- All surgery as potential for complications and undesired outcomes
- There are no scientifically proven suppliments that increase penis size.
