Dear Ask The Doctor: When i eat it feels like the food gets stuck at the top of my abdomen and i have been burping and having gas and a little pain in my abdomen what could be causing this and what medicine can i take this has been going on for 6 days now
Dear Shiryl: You may have gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, oesophageal stricture (narrowing) or irritable bowel syndrome. If simple analgesia, paracetamoI, does not improve your symptoms, I suggest attending your family doctor for a detailed history and clinical examination. He may refer you to a gastroenterologist for an endoscopy, which allows visualisation of the lining of the stomach and intestines through a camera lens. You may also need to be tested for Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium which is linked with gastritis, duodenal and gastric ulceration, but this can be carried out at the same time as endoscopy. |
