Dear Ask The Doctor: What is a illostomy and what is the average recoop time for this procedure? My husband had a preforated bowel with multiple concerns requiring loss of 1/2 the bowel a portion of the colon and 2 feet of intestine
Dear Barbara: A stoma is deliberate opening made by a surgeon in the bowel (intestines) to allow the contents of the bowel to be evacuated. An ileostomy is a stoma that is created in the Ileum (part of the small intestines). The ileostomy is anchored to the skin and the intestinal contents collected in special collection bags. An ileostomy is usually performed when it is not medically safe to repair damaged colon (large bowel). In these cases the ileostomy is temporary and allows time for the repaired colon to heal. When the colon has healed another operation is performed to reverse the ileostomy and return the small bowel to the abdominal cavity. An ileostomy requires major abdominal surgery. Recovery time will vary from patient to patient and depends on other procedures performed at the time of surgery. Recovery time may be 6 weeks or longer. |
