Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 16 year old male. Last night for no reason I threw up right before I went to bed. Just a few moments ago I burped but then I had an acidic feeling in my nose. Now the puking might have just been a coincidence, but I was wondering if I was developing acid reflux. I know that my grandma has it and I know my mom usually has heartburn and she takes Prevacid. I just wanted to know if it sounded like I was getting acid reflux.
Dear Curtis: Hello, I understand your worry on possible Acide Reflux. Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash of acid irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD signs and symptoms.Heartburn, chest pain, dry cough, hoarseness and regurgitation are the symptoms that you would need to have in order to think of this possibility. In my opinion this could be an isolated event, however if you start feeling heartburn more frequently or bloating especially after eating fatty foods I would suggest you to consult your primary care physician to rule out a possibility of Reflux. In the meantime eat 2 hours before going to bed, avoid fatty and spicy foods at night. I wish you the best. |
