Dear Ask The Doctor: Im currently 23 years old and a competitive soccer player. I injured my knee in july 2009 and have not played sinced. I have been to my orthopedic and they have said my acl is still intact but it is very loose and the option of a brace is available but i have the risk of tearing it complelty as well as other ligaments. Whereas I can opt surgery which I am out for 6-8 months evern though it is not torn. Any help is appreciated
Dear Mohamed: Since you are a competitive soccer player surgery is the best option for the shortest recovery time. Please note, the rehabilitation phase after surgery is quite tedious and will be at least 6 months but may be as long as a year. As your surgeon has pointed out, wearing a brace does not garauntee full recovery and there is still the risk of doing further damage which will require surgical repair. |
