Andropause and Different Testosterone Inject Sites

Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm currently getting testosterone therapy. The first shot I received in the hip. The 2nd shot 30 days later was in the arm. Does it matter where the injection is given?

Dear Jim: The most common reason for testosterone therapy in my practice is Andropause.

Andropause is a condition that is associated with the decrease in the male hormone testosterone.  A person experiencing andropause may have a number of symptoms related to the condition and could be at risk of other serious health conditions such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease without proper treatment.

Although symptoms may vary from person to person, common symptoms of men going through andropause include:

  • low sex drive
  • difficulties getting erections or erections that are not as strong as usual
  • lack of energy
  • depression
  • irritability and mood swings
  • loss of strength or muscle mass
  • increased body fat
  • hot flashes

Unlike menopause, the decrease in testosterone and the development of symptoms is more slow and gradual.

Testosterone injections are a common method of treatment.  Testosterone can also be replaced by patches, gels and capsules. your doctor will be able to decide what is best for you based on your medical history.

In terms of injections, they must be injected into your muscle. From the muscle, it is absorbed by the rest of the body.  Theoretically, any muscle will work.  The hip or gluteal muscles are often used because they are the largest muscles in the body.  Again, theoretically, any muscle will work so no it doesn't matter which muscle is used as long as your are receiving the benefits of treatment.
