After Surgery the doctor did not close my Friends Incision , Why?

Dear Ask The Doctor: He had an emergencey appaedecomy, was in the hospital for a week and a half, , he was discharged to day, but they didnt stich him up. is thiera reason to send some one home with a incesion like this, and just have it bandaged? and cleaned daily? wouldnt stiches cause less scar tissue?
Dear James: It seems your friend may have had a ruptured appendix. When such a situation occurs the wound is usually left open to reduce the chances of developing an infection at the incision site. The incision can then be closed after treatment with antibiotics has been completed. Quite likely, his surgeon will close the incision at his first follow up visit. |
