Cuboid bone broken and treatment

Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently broke my cuboid bone in my left foot, a little bit of bone snapped off. i went to the hospital and they put it in plaster and said i would need it on for 6-8 weeks but it was non weight bearing which is frustrating! i went back 10 days later and the doctor x-rayed and re-potted my foot he then said i would only need the pot for a further 3 weeks and i could walk on it! but i cannot put weight on it as i get shooting pains in my foot and up my leg! im not too sure what to do or what to think as it seems early to walk on it and he has cut my treatment short by 2-3 weeks! please help!

Dear Maddie: Generally, fractures of the lower limb tkae approximately 12 weeks to heal with the majority of that time spent in a cast or some other device for immoblization. It seems to be a little premature for you to weight bearing at this time. The fact that you have significant pain when you try to walk suggest that you have not healed sufficiently to place any weight on the foot. I would allow 6 weeks before attemptin any weight-bearing. .
