Ankle surgery and Possible Compartment Syndrome

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had ankle surgery and was told no weight bearing on the foot. I was given crutches to use but have been unable to use them because everytime I stand or lower my leg it begins to cramp. I cannot reach the area where it is cramping because i have a cast on. It does this when I stand, lower my leg down to the floor, everytime I get up in an upright positions. The doctor did check for a blood clot and there was no sign of this. I want to know what I can do so this pain will stop.

Dear Rochelle: The medications you are presently taking are usually pretty good at relieving pain. The fact that you are still having pain despite these medications suggest that there may something else wrong. You mention that your doctor has checked for blood clot in the leg which was negative. Another important complication to rule out is compartment syndrome which can sometimes present with the symptoms you are experiencing. You should have your doctor check for that.
