Dear Ask The Doctor: My child had a stomach issue where he was throwing up and after a few days I took him to the doctor. They prescribed him METOCLOPRAMIDE 10 MG and he had horrible side effects. is this a medication that should be prescribed to a child as young as 11 with food poising symptems?
Dear Shayna: I realize your concern about your childs condition. Food poisoning usually includes symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that occur suddenly (within 48 hours) after consuming a contaminated food or drink. Surely the most important part of the treatment is to keep a good hydration to restore the losses of water and electrolytes lost during diarrhea and vomits.METOCLOPRAMIDE was prescribed to help stop the vomits, ironically side effects like diarrhea and vomits could be present especially if the medicine is taken with food, therefore it is recommended to take it at least 30 minutes before ingesting food. There is no problem in prescribing this medication to a11year old, but perhaps you might want to give him only 5mg daily. I will also suggest him to drink small frequent sips of clear liquids which is the best way to stay hydrated. Once hydrated your son will recover his appetite but consider feeding him with rice, wheat, breads, potatoes, low-sugar cereals, lean meats, and chicken for a start. Usually this type of infections last for a few days, but if the symptoms persists for more than a week, a visit to the Pediatrician could be considered. I wish him a prompt recovery. |
