Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi i took my baby to the doctor on monday n they told me he has thrush in his mouth and they gave me medicine but now he was it more and other way on the back of the mouth close to his throat anl , he dont want to eat , his mouth its getting swollen and he lost his voice What should i do? Dear Yanet: I know how worried you are about your baby; let me give you some advice. First, you should know that oral thrush is a common infection that affects many newborns and younger children. It is caused by the Candida albicans yeast or fungus, which can also cause vaginal infections and diaper rashes. Thrush is usually treated with a prescription medicine called Nystatin which is given four times a day. Treatment is continued for about 7 to 10 days and at least 3 days after you no longer see any signs of thrush. If your child's infection isn't quickly improving after a few days, you may want to use gauze to directly rub the medication on the white patches. Although your child will likely swallow the dose of Nystatin, since it isn't absorbed, it is the direct contact with the yeast that combats the infection. Other treatment options include FLuconazole or Gentian Violet. If no improvement is noticed after 3 to 4 days, you should take your baby to the pediatrician for a re evaluation. It is also very important to sterilize bottles, pacifiers and avoid contact of any object with his mouth. I wish him a prompt recovery. |
