Dear Ask The Doctor: My 6 year old has had a finger prick test that came back at 8.2 is that high
Dear Joanne: Finger prick glucose testing can be inaccurate in many circumstances, especially if not carried out in the correct environment, with clean dry hands. This reading is high if this was a fasting sample >8hours but if after a meal, this is not significantly high. If your son has classic symptoms of diabetes including weight loss, increased thirst (often insatiable), increased urination, generalized fatigue or malaise, then I would advise contacting your family doctor for appropriate testing such as a fasting plasma glucose sample or an oral glucose tolerance test. |
