Dear Ask The Doctor: I HAVE A 3 YEAR OLD SON. WHEN I TOOK HIM TO THE PEDIATRICIAN FOR HIS YEARLY CHECK UP SHE HEARD A MURMUR AND HIS HEART "SKIPPING BEATS". HIS EKG SHOWED NORMAL SINUS RHYTHM. HIS ECHO SHOWED MILD MITRAL, TRICUSPID, AND PULMONIC REGURGITATION. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, IF ANYTHING?
Dear Tracy:This murmur may just be a flow murmur, which is a common finding in young patients. The mild mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary regurgitation is of limited significance, and mild regurgitation is sometimes present on routine echo screening. I would advise follow-up yearly with a cardiologist, to assess the murmur and yearly repeat echocardiogram, to monitor blood flow through the heart valves and assess degree of regurgitation. |
