Dear Ask The Doctor: I've had an upset stomach and diarrehea for 4 days, I've tried pepto bismol and drinking a lot of water, nothing seems to be working, I think it stemmed from some bad meat I ate in my fridge on tuesday but can't be sure, I also threw up tuesday night but that was the only time I threw up, I started feeling better yesterday and forced myself to eat steak and eggs for breakfast and it worked but then later I got hungry again and had a cheese burger and some fries and last night I was in a lot of pain, I used the bathroom 4 times between 2am and 6am. It seems that after I use the bathroom my stomach does not hurt but I can still feel that something is not right. Should I go to he hospital?
Dear Adam: From the acute onset of symptoms you describe, you may have inflammation of the gastro-intestinal tract or gastroenteritis. This is usually infective in origin, especially with common viruses and bacteria, and may be the result of ingesting contaminated food or fluid. It is usually self-limited and will run its own course in 24 to 48 hours, but can be complicated by dehydration. Treatment involves oral rehydration therapy with fluid and electrolyte solutions which are available in most drug-stores. If symptoms are not improving, or you cannot tolerate any oral fluids, I would advise attending your family doctor as you may require anti-nausea medication or intravenous fluids. |
