Bowel movement with red liquid

Dear Ask The Doctor: Had a bowel movement that contained red liquid. Second time in past two days it has happened. I have been drinking a lot of diet cherry 7up, could this have caused the red liquid?

Dear Prefer: It is possible that the colour of your bowel movements may be linked with food or fluids ingested. However your symptoms may also be a sign of bleeding from the back passage. This can occur for a variety of reasons including: gastro-intestinal infection, inflammation of the colon, haemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, and some rarer disorders such as angiodysplasia and malignant growth. I advise that if your symptoms are not improving, you should visit your family doctor for a detailed history and clinical examination, to find out the cause in your case. |
