Head injuries requiring Emergency Department attendance

Dear Ask The Doctor: My son fell hit his face and side of head on ground it knocked him out and he said when he came to his face was still bouncing off ground. Should I have him seen? Happened 24 hours ago.
Dear Mindy: Your son should attend the local emergency department if he has any of the following symptoms: loss of consciousness knocked-out after the head injury, amnesia (memory loss) for events before or after the injury, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, persistent severe headache or weakness in any limbs or difficultly walking. Attend ED also if he was taking drugs or alcohol, or if he has a history of a bleeding/clotting disorder. He may sleep after a head injury, however he should not be left unsupervised. It is vital that there is somebody suitable at home to supervise him (parent or guardian) for a period of 24-48 hours. |
