Headaches due to high blood pressure

Dear Ask The Doctor: 1) I have started medicine due to hypertension 10 days ago. I still have the headache which was my original complaint for which I went to the dr. I called him after 10 days of the medicine. I still have the headache. He said to continue for another 10 days in order for the body to get the full affect of the medicine. How long should it really take for the headache to go away after beginning the medicine if it is related to hypertension? 2) Could the headache just as likely be due to any of the following: low iron low vitamin D birth control pills (Cerazette)
Dear Nikki: Mild to moderate hypertension (high blood pressure) is usually asymptomatic. Severe hypertension may cause headache, visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting and confusion. The medication that has been started Cardiloc (bisoprolol) is a Beta-blocker and may itself cause fatigue and headaches. A steady state is attained within 5 days of once daily dosing with Bisoprolol. In addition to this Cerazette, a progesterone-only-pill may cause headache, and iron deficiency causes fatigue and tiredness. Therefore if your symptoms are not improving, I suggest returning to your family doctor, to obtain an alternative diagnosis for your headache. |
