Causes of Adult Acne |
|
DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: I have suddenly developed pimples at 32 years of age, having not had them since I was a teenager. Why am I getting acne as an adult?
DEAR ALICE: Acne at any age can be frustrating. It is true that it is more common in teenagers but the same causes of acne can play a factor as an adult. The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. Fluctuating levels of sex hormones can affect acne. Boys and girls experience fluctuating levels of hormones during puberty. As adults, pregnancy, the birth control pill, other prescribed medications and stress can affect hormone levels. Skin care and cosmetic products can play a factor as well. Greasy or oily products tend to block your pores allowing for an environment of bacteria causing acne to thrive. If this is the case for you, switching to a “water based” or “oil free” product can help As with all medical conditions, your genetics can play a significant role. That means - it is not your fault! No specific types of food or levels of exercise and sweat have been proven to cause acne. The good news is acne can be treated effectively. You should see your family physician and discuss your treatment options. |
