Slowly Spreading Blotchy Skin Rash

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a skin rash that has been present on my body for over 2 years. It has caused me no pain but it seems to be slowly spreading. I have tried bathing more frequently and it seems to affect it but it doesn't recede completely. Also I have noticed peeling skin when bathing. The rash is red and blotchy and sometimes itches but not all of the time. Are there any creams or treatments you can recommend?
Dear Justin: Red & blotchy skin rashes are usually related to Seborrheic dermatitis. Stress, oily skin, weather extremes, fatigue, and infrequent shampooing are the most common reasons for this condition. You can use a hydrocortisone cream (1%) to soothe the rash, and also keep the affected area hydrated using moisturizer. When cleaning the area, try to use mild cleansers instead of harsh soaps. Keeping the rash open to air will also help it heal faster, so try to avoid wearing tight clothes around the affected area.
