Dear Ask The Doctor: I've been prescribed permethrin for scabies. How long after using it should new bites stop appearing?
Dear Blerm: Scabies is an infectious condition caused by a parasite. Permethrin should be applied on the entire body from neck down to soles of the feet. Usually the treatment needs to be repeated 7 days after the first treatment to be entirely effective and needs to be kept for atleast 8-14 hours each time. Antihistamines can also be used for itching which may persist even 2-3 weeks are treatment with permethrin. Moreover in order to prevent new infection all beddings, clothes , sheets shouwls be washed thoroughly before reuse and all members of the family should be treated. |
