Prednisolone may cause peptic ulceration

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a peptic ulcer, and have been given Azithromycin Tablets (250mg) and prednisone (10mg 3 2xa day) will either of these irritate my ulcer?

Dear Traci: Prednisolone (steroid) and ibuprofen (NSAID) are well known to cause peptic ulceration, therefore I would only take these medications if absolutely necessary. It is advisable to take these medications with food and in an enteric coated version if available. Azithromycin may cause diarrhea and nausea; however this is usually reported with single high dose regimens, and should not pose any problems at this relatively low dose.
