Breast Pain in One Specific Area |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: For the past two weeks i have been expirencing breast pain in my right breast only. It is not my whole breast. it is one specific area. If this specific area is touched or any pressure (even the lightest pressure) is applied to that one area then a sharp pain goes through that entire breast for about 30 seconds. It is very painful, and i'm not entirely sure what to do. at first i thought it was a muscle cramp, but i have givin it two weeks. What should I do? Should I be worried? And what could it be. Dear Nicole: A breast mass can be one of the most anxiety provoking moments in a women's life. I am often asked when to see a doctor about a newly idenitifed breast mass .... my answer to that is Every Single Time. There are many experts that will disagree but the fact of the matter is that no matter how much you read about on identifying breast masses ... you will never be sure. Identifying breast masses and differentiating them as benign or worrisome requires years of training to be comfortable and requires familiarity with different breast types in different age groups and ethnic populations. The most likely explanation in your age group (women under the age of 30) is fibrocystic breast disease. The term disease is misleading because it not actually a disease but a normal condition experienced by a large percentage of women. Symptoms of fibrocystic breast disease include painful, swollen, lumpy bumpy breasts which often change as you go through your cycle. It may affect one or both breasts and usually resolves after several months. If it is bothersome, your family doctor may advise the birth control pill as a way of treatment. Please see your doctor to verify if it is fibrocystic breast disease. |
