Abscess on shoulder blade

Dear Ask The Doctor: My 18 year old daughter started getting what I call boils under her arms. They were really big, painful and full of green puss. Now they are showing up on her right shoulder blade. We went to the emergency room on Sun. and they called it an Abscess. It is spreading and growing and we are able to pop it three and four times a day to get lots of puss out. The ER doctor prescribe her Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim. Is that the correct antibiotic for this type of infection?
Dear Anita: Abscesses can be caused by minor breaks and punctures of the skin, obstruction of sweat glands and oil (sebaceous) glands, and inflammation of hair follicles. They contain dead cells, bacteria, and other debris, which causes inflammation and pain. Common bacteria, such as staphylococci.Sometimes if localized in the armpits, they could be the result of sweat glands obstructed by the use of Anti-Perspiring lotions. Depending on the entity producing them, the use of antibiotics might be granted. Sulfamethotaxole plus Trimethropin is certainly a good choice for Bacterial infection. I suggest your daughter to comply with her treatment. Drainage of the pus might also be needed. I wish her a prompt recovery. |
