Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been prescribed 1000mg of Zithromax. It's two 500mg pills that only need to be taken once. I was prescribed this antibiotic for urethritis. I have been doing some research online about this drug and have found some pretty alarming side effect such as liver damage and heart rhythm problems. I do suffer from high anxiety so this is only feeding into it. I have not taken the medicine yet and I'm wondering now if I should try and get a different medication. I am a 23 year old male with no history of heart problems or liver problems. Should this be a pretty safe drug for me to take?
Dear Chris: I understand your concern about your medication side effects. I know that you read about them but let me tell you that it does not mean that it will happen to you, this antibiotic is one of the safe ones and since it is only one dose of 1 gm, the possibilities of liver damage and heart problems diminish.
The dosage that you were prescribed for the condition that you have is the right one, and I recommend you to take it as soon as possible to stop the infection advance to your bladder and further. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
