Dear Ask The Doctor: My doctor just prescribed avandia for my diabetes. there is so much in the press about this drug. he swears it's safe. what's your opinion?
Dear Vickie: Rosiglitazone belongs to a class of drugs known as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists. There has been recent evidence published suggesting that rosiglitazone increases the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) and cardiovascular death. Rosiglitazone is not recommended for people with a history of heart failure or with previous problems that might have led to heart dysfunction. Rosiglitazone should also be used with caution in women at high risk of fractures. In view of the potential cardiovascular risks and in the absence of evidence of other health advantages, when compared to other diabetic medications, I advise consulting your family doctor for a suitable alternative. |
