Dear Ask The Doctor: My 88 year old mother-in-law has hives induced by inhaling liquid smoke. Her doctor gave a Prednisone shot and Prednisone dose pack 24 hrs. ago. She takes blood pressure medication. Can she take an over the counter antihistamine with BP Meds to help relieve itching? Dear Rita: Due to the limited information you have provided, it is difficult to say if there are any potential drug interactions as I do not know the class of anti-hypertensive prescribed or the anti-histamine administered. There are a few potential interactions, with antihistamines often lowering blood pressure even further and should be used with caution. Steroids in the long term may cause hypertension (high blood pressure), but in the short-term should be tolerated. I advise attending your local pharmacist for advice, specific to your mother-in-law’s case. |
