NSAID Interactions with Warfarin

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi. I had a DVT 2 years ago and tested positive for Factor 5 Leiden. Have been on warfarin ever since (and will be forever). Today was diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement, which strongly recommends taking anti-inflammatory pills. Are there any anti-inflammatory I can take that don't / won't cause issues with warfarin? Am 47 year old white male, avg height and build, non-smoker. Stunned the ED when the DVT diagnosis came through.
Dear Mike: Warfarin may have interactions with many medications. All non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) may potentially interact with warfarin, and enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, raising the INR, and thinning the blood. Even simple acetaminophen may interact with warfarin. Concurrent use of routine acetaminophen, especially at dosages greater than 3 grams/day, and warfarin may result in elevated anticoagulant effects, also raising the INR, and thinning the blood. If absolutely necessary these medications may be administered with warfarin, but I would advise attending your family doctor for a prescription and close monitoring of INR levels for increased anticoagulant effects, and increased risk of bleeding. |
