Dear Ask The Doctor: I was wondering wondering if i can consume any alcohol while taking penicillin 500 mg once every eight hours for a throat infection?
Dear Joshua: I understand your doubt about drinking alcohol while taking antibiotics. Antibiotics are metabolized in great part by the liver which also metabolizes Alcohol using especial enzymes common for both of them. Drinking Alcohol when taken along with medications could affect the extent to which an administered dose of a drug reaches its site of action. Also nausea vomits, convulsions, headaches, flushing and abdominal cramps could be present and since they are common side effects from both alcohol and drugs, it can sometimes be difficult to tell which side effects are which! For this reason, Doctors usually suggest that people keep their alcohol to the minimum when on medication. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
