Failure to get clearance for surgery - Abnormal Liver enzymes

Dear Ask The Doctor: I was scheduled for back surgury and had high liver enzymes found in my blood work (blood normal - 1 month prior). I went to specialist for clearance, and we determined that I was taking too much tylenol. Waited a week, and blood was tested. Results: Same high (3 times normal) liver enzymes and now high iron levels. The spine surgury will remove a lower back cyst on nerve, and fuse two bones. It is painful. I do not see a good result. What do you think. Also, now I cannot take ibuprophen (only one kidney damaged - lost the other to cancer), aspirin (cannot tolerate), or Tylenol. Ouch.
Dear Denise: The Tylenol has obviously damaged your liver, whether this damage is temporary or permanent remains to be seen. I suspect your doctor will repeat your liver enzyme test about four weks after the last test to see what the trends are. You should NOT take any medications called Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS), such as Ibuprofen, as while they are very good for pain they are known to cause damage to the kidneys. Discuss with your docotrs the use of medications such as Vicodin or morphin to control your pain until your liver function returns to normal and you can have your surgery. |
