Dear Ask The Doctor: So i was recently prescribed the beta blocker "Propranolol" yesterday for anxiety and forgot to ask about what effects running would have on me. Its a relatively small does 10mg to be taken 4 times a day and im worried i might get into trouble if do my training, running/lifting weights. Obviously with my heart being so quiet on these its frigtning not feeling it pump whilst doing any activity!
So is it safe to train?
Dear John: Hello. I realize your concern about Beta Blockers and its side effects. Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. When you take beta blockers, the heart beats more slowly and with less force, thereby reducing blood pressure. Beta blockers also help blood vessels open up to improve blood flow.Common side effects are Fatigue, Cold hands, Dizziness and Weakness. Usually at this low dose, side effects these side effects might not probably be felt but since it could still lower your heart rate, you might want to decrease the intensity of your exercises if you start feeling lightheaded, stop immediately and rest. |
