Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello I have been taking bendroflumethiazide and it is proving a very good medication for reducing my high blood pressure, however my hair is getting very thin,is there any choice of diuretic that may not affect my hair as its quite a distressing side effect? Thank you Barbara
Dear Barbara: Thiazide diuretics may be associated with alopecia (hair loss) in <1% of patients. There are other drug options available to treat your high blood pressure including ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers, which are not associated with alopecia. I would advise attending your family doctor for an alternative prescription. |
