Dear Ask The Doctor: I am male, about 290 pounds, suffer from asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, and diabetes. I am suffering with allergies right now, is there a safe OTC med that won't have an adverse affect on my symptoms?
Dear Rod:Antihistamines may relieve your symptoms of allergic rhinitis. They are broadly grouped into 2 generations based on their perceived sedative properties, but are available over the counter in most drug stores. First-generation compounds include diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine, and brompheniramine and are generally believed to induce high levels of impairment or sedation. Second-generation compounds include loratadine, desloratadine, cetirizine, and fexofenadine; these are often referred to as nonsedating antihistamines. It may be worth trial of a second generation non-sedating antihistamine, if you drive or operate machinery on a regular basis. Alternative therapy involves the use of intranasal glucocorticoids and at the recommended dose these should not cause adverse effects. Although there is the potential that some steroid may be absorbed systemically and impair blood sugar and blood pressure control. These are only available on prescription from your family doctor, and provide an alternative option, if symptoms on not controlled with antihistamines. . |
