Prolonged treatment with pantoprazole (Pantoloc)

Dear Ask The Doctor: I've been taking 40mgs of Pantoloc every day for the past 5 years. Should I be concerned about using this medication over an exented period of time?
Dear Raymond: Prolonged treatment with pantoprazole (typically >3 years) may lead to vitamin B12 malabsorption and subsequent deficiency. Long-term pantoprazole therapy (especially in patients who were H. pylori positive) may cause atrophic gastritis, which means the lining of the stomach shrinks, weakens and withers away. There have been reports of malignancy associated with long-term use in rodent studies, however these have never been reported in humans. Therefore if you have been on long-term therapy, it may be advisable to determine your vitamin B12 levels by a simple blood test, with your family doctor.. |
