Dear Ask The Doctor: Im taking warfarin and i want to undergo zygoma bone reduction is it possible? my dr. said if i undergo any surgery i have to stop immediately the warfarin. hope for your reply as soon as possible.
Dear Kim: Regardless of the surgical procedure you are to undergo, you will need to stop warfarin at least three days before the procedure. Warfarin greatly increases the risk of uncontrollable bleeding during surgery. It takes about three days for the effect of the drug to disappear and thus the rationale behind discontinuing the drug three days before surgery. Your surgeon will place you on an alternative to warfarin to reduce the likelihood of developing vein thrombosis. |
