Dosage of amoxicillin |
|
DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: I just took my son to a clinic. He has strep throat and was prescribed amoxicillin 500mg twice a day. He is 11 years old and weighs approximately 70 lbs. Is this the correct dosage? The nurse at the clinic kept getting confused as she was trying to figure out the dosage. Thanks.
DEAR MICHAEL: Amoxicillin dosage in children is based on weight. it is usually reccomended a child take no more than 80mg of Amoxicilling per kg of weight per day. This means for a 30Kg child, no more than 2400mg of amoxicillin should be given in a day. your child is taking 1000mg per day and this is considered to be an acceptable amount
I hope that helps |
