Tenormin versus Micardis treatment for hypertension

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is there any problem with replacing tenormin with Micardis?
Dear Edward:Tenormin (Atenolol) is a beta-blocker and micardis (Telmisartan) an angiotensin II receptor blocker. Both can be used in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). According to the hypertension guidelines, in someone of your age (> 55years), a calcium channel antagonist or diuretic medication is indicated. Beta-blockers have been removed from the guidelines as single therapy, unless there is another indication for the beta-blocker such as angina symptoms, previous heart attack or heart failure. Telmisartan is a newer agent and works by a different mechanism than the beta-blocker, and most likely works better as a single treatment against hypertension. Alterations in medications must always be confirmed by your family doctor. |
