Atenolol or Diltiazem for rate control in AF

Dear Ask The Doctor: I've been on Diltaizem 250ERmg for about a year and just switched to Atenolol 25.mg per doctors direction. I have HO Fribulation. Is there a problem getting off Diltiazem cold turkey?
Dear Mary Alice:No there should not be a problem discontinuing Diltiazem, provided you commence the atenolol your atrial fibrillation should be rate controlled. Therefore I would commence the beta-blocker immediately once you discontinue the Diltiazem, to keep your heart rate controlled with a history of AF. |
