Fluoxetine and cholesterol levels

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have read the fluoxetine may have an effect on cholesterol? Is it a coincidence that when I started to take the fluoxetine every day that my LDL and cholesterol went up?
Dear Stan:Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and high cholesterol levels have been associated in <1% of patients taking this drug. Cholesterol levels tend to raise as the decades increase; therefore this may be a coincidence or a rare side-effect of this medication. I would advise regular monitoring of your fasting lipid profile and dietary modifications to reduce LDL and cholesterol levels. |
