Dear Ask The Doctor: I had a heart attack in 2007 because of a blood clot and I had by-pass surgery. I do not have a stentand had no heart damage. I have been taking plavix since then. My doctor says it is of no value to me to continue taking the Plavix. What I have read says Plavix prevents blood clots. Can you give me your insight on this? Thanks, Kenneth
Dear Kenneth: Generally plavix should be continued for 12 months following a heart attack. Beyond this there is no strong evidence that the benefits exceed the risks of bleeding. Therefore it may be advisable to discontinue use at this time, and I would recommend discussing this with your cardiologist. |
