Hypnotic effect of diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is it safe to take Benadryl everynight (50mg) to help me sleep. I've been doing this for about 2 yrs.
Dear Michael: Benadryl contains diphenhydramine which is a first generation antihistamine. It is mainly used in the treatment of allergies and allergic reactions, but also has a powerful sedative or hypnotic effect. It is widely used in nonprescription sleep aids with a maximum recommended dose of 50 mg by the U.S. FDA. It is possible to build tolerance to the sedative effects of this medication and for this reason I would not recommend it for long-term usage. I would advise speaking to your family physician for information on relaxation techniques and improving the quality of your sleep, without the use of medication. |
