Streph throat and amoxicillan

Dear Ask The Doctor: My 25 year old son had streph throat and was given amoxicillan for 10 days. He then contracted a cold around the same time that he was taking the amoxicillan. He then developed an itch on approx the 7th day of taking the medication. Two days later it became a severe itch starting on his hands and feet which started to spread to his ears etc but there is no rash. He took benedryl to stop it and it worked. He saw a doctor at the walk-in clinic today and found that he has streph throat...again 2nd time in less than 3 weeks. The doctor gave him clarithromycin (500mg) and told my son that the itch is probably because his body is trying to fight the streph throat. He just started the new medication today. I'm not a doctor but I believe the itch is a reaction to the amoxicillan...and if so should he be on this new medication? If it's an allergic reaction then he should never take amoxicillan again, am I correct? Also, can he take benedryl while taking the new medication? Thank you for your assistance.
