Ciprofloxacin and Exercise |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Recently, I was admitted to the ER for kidney stones. I passed the stones -- none remained afterward -- and the doctor gave me a prescription for Ciprofloxacin HCL. 20 pills, 500 MG, twice a day. I exercise regularly; in particular I run, weight lift, cycle, and swim. From what little I understand, possible complications associated with Cipro involve the musculoskeletal system; so, naturally, I'm concerned about my exercise routine. At what point should I return to exercise and how should I view/understand the facts (or speculation) about this drug in relation to my particular lifestyle? Thank you. Dear Brandon: You should be able to return to exercise at your earliest convenience. It is best to gradually increase your exercise efforts as opposed to immediately resuming where you left off. Ciprofloxacin itself should not interfere with your lifestyle. However, some common side effects include headcase, nausea, blurry vision, dizziness and stomach upset. These symptoms may interfere with your workouts and force you to rest until the entire medication course is completed. If you recently had kidney stones, it is important to keep yourself hydrated to prevent recurrence. |
