Antipsychotics and Antidepressants in Pregnancy |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 25 year old female. My height is 5'7'' and I weigh 231 pounds. I have schizophrenia/bipolar disorder. I have been on medications for it for the past year and a half. I have been taking 100 mg of Seroquel, 225 mg of Effexor XR, and 12 mg of Invega to manage my symptoms. I have recently decided that I want to have a baby. Are any of these medications safe to take while pregnant? Dear Julie: This is a very good question. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to the fetus when a drug is given in pregnancy. The pregnancy category of C is given to drugs that have not been clearly studied amongst pregnant individuals. The category C have also shown certain side effects in animal studies. The three medications that you are currently taking all fall under the category C. However, drugs in category of C still can be taken in pregnancy if the health care provider believes that the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. |
